I LOVE YOU in Italian

Hey ciao! Are you curious to know how to say “i love you” in Italian?

Ah, Italy! The country of love! Have you ever watched an Italian movie starring Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren? Movies that tell of Italian love and of how romantic Italian people are?

Italy is thought of as the country of love because Italian literary, artistic, and cinematic culture have spoken so much about love and that view has spread throughout the world.

That’s why I think you’ve been asked at least once in your life:

“how do you say I love you in Italian?”

and also

“what does it mean in the Italian language and in Italian culture?”

The first news I will give you will probably leave you fascinated.

I LOVE YOU in Italian

In the Italian language there are two ways of saying I ❤️ you.

  • TI VOGLIO BENE

This phrase expresses the love you feel for a friend, a parent, a grandparent, a pet and so on. It’s an expression that you use when you’re talking to  a person who is close to you, but not to the love of your life.

Mamma, ti voglio tanto bene / Mom, I love you so much

  • TI AMO

This is the phrase you say to express your feelings to your partner, to the person you choose to share your life with.

Amore mio, ti amo tanto! / My love, I do love you!

These are the two Italian phrases for love. The two expressions you use to declare your feelings. Maybe accompanied later by a kiss!

Now we will read some love Italian quotes.

Maybe they will help you declare your love to your soul mate!

Italian authors have always talked about love. But if we want to mention the most famous one, we will think about Dante Alighieri.

He dedicated his life to writing poems about his love Beatrice.

Now we read some of his love phrases in Italian (and English translation).

“Aiutami da lei, famoso saggio, Ch’ella mi fa tremar le vene e i polsi.” / “Help me, o famous sage, to stand against her, for she has made my blood and pulses shudder.”
“Non può comprendere la passione chi non l’ha provata” / “You can’t understand passion if you haven’t tried it”
“Io spero di dicer di lei quello che mai non fue detto d’alcuna” / “I hope to tell of her what has never been said of any girl”

These are just a few Italian quotes about love written by the great poet.

Shall we finish with another wonderful Italian quote about love written by another great poet.

“Lo sai. Non vedo nella mia vita altra compagna, non vedo altra gioia. Rimani. Riposati. Non temere di nulla. Dormi stanotte sul mio cuore.” / “You know. I don’t see any other partner in my life, I see no other joy. Stay. Rest. Don’t be afraid of anything. Sleep on my heart tonight.”

Giuseppe Ungaretti
